What is a conversion goal?

Modified on Thu, 30 Oct at 11:03 AM

conversion goal tells Pathmonk what action you want your website visitors to take. It’s the main outcome you want to achieve, for example, book a demo, start a trial, make a purchase, or submit a lead form.

By setting a conversion goal, you’re telling Pathmonk what success looks like for your business. Pathmonk then uses this information to analyze user behavior, personalize their experience, and help more visitors complete that action.

⚠️ Warning: A conversion goal is not the same as a completed conversion. It represents the step before the final action — for example, visiting the right product page or opening the booking form.
Successful conversions are measured only when a tracked event confirms that the action has been completed.

How conversion goals work

  1. You define your main goal during the onboarding— such as booking a demo, starting a trial, or making a purchase. If needed, you can change it later.

  2. You choose how the goal will happen — once you’ve defined your goal, you’ll decide how visitors will complete it. This is called the implementation method, for example, redirecting visitors to your existing booking page, embedding your scheduling tool, or using a Pathmonk-built form inside a microexperience. Each method has different benefits depending on your setup and level of customization.

  3. Pathmonk tracks and optimizes — After setup, Pathmonk detects patterns that lead to conversions and personalizes what each visitor sees, guiding them toward your chosen goal and increasing the number of completed actions over time.

Available conversion goals in Pathmonk

Here are the goals you can select:

  • Book demo or appointment – Drive visitors to schedule a demo or meeting.

  • Purchase – Ideal for e-commerce, focused on completing transactions.

  • Phone call - Best if you want to generate more calls

  • Start trial – Guide visitors to sign up for a free trial.

  • Collect leads – Capture visitor information through forms or downloads.

  • Other goals – For custom actions such as newsletter signups or quizzes.

⚠️ You can only select one primary conversion goal during onboarding. Once your campaign is live and data is being collected, you can later add a secondary goal if needed.

How to check or change your conversion goal

You can review or update your conversion goal anytime from your Pathmonk dashboard.

  1. Go to Analytics → Events → Overview.

  2. At the top, under the Pathmonk Goals section (highlighted in red in the image), you’ll see your current goal. Click on it to edit.

3. In the Goal info card, go to the Tracking Method tab. Adjust the use case if necessary and complete the setup for your chosen implementation method

⚠️ Remember: Your conversion goal is not the same as a completed conversion. If you previously used, for instance, Start trial as your goal and your tracked event was a “thank you” page, but now you’re switching your goal to Purchase — tracked through a pixel or a different “thank you” page — you’ll need to update the tracked event as well. Each conversion goal must be linked to the correct tracked event to measure results accurately.
